Wiccan? Divorced? Living in Indiana? Don't try to teach your child anything about your religion.

A judge in Indianapolis prohibited two divorced Wiccan parents from exposing their child to "non-mainstream religious beliefs". And then did not define "mainstream" in his order. The father, assisted by the Indiana ACLU, is appealing the order.

I *knew* there was a reason we needed to leave Indiana.
j/k - I just shared the information from this article with Marc - especially since we're working through the initial stages of divorce...and in a way I see a lot of similarities between us and this couple. He was as flabbergasted as I was, and was very glad to hear that the ICLU was involved.

URK?

Ah, well, that's trivial then. Just show the Department of Defense regulations recognizing Wicca and accomodating the beleifs of Wiccan servicemen. The judge can hardly claim it's "not mainstream" when the DoD provides Wiccan services at your funeral.

*nods* everybody interviewed in that article, from a history professor to an outside legal expert, said the appeal should be a "slam dunk"...

You know, there ought to be a way to make *that* egregious a reversal have some sort of effect on the idiot that made the decision... I mean, there's making an honest judicial mistake - happens all the time - and there's being a complete and total bigoted idiot.

You've not had any such problems, I take it...

Of course, an obvious question is, why is the kid going to Catholic school? Of course, if that school happens to be Jesuit, the answer is equally obvious: To teach the kid to think. It's what Jesuits are good at. (I wouldn't have any qualms about sending any kids I might have to Jesuit school. Probably give the good fathers fits, but the kid would be well educated. :) But I don't know if that's the case or not...

Sometimes, time, distance, and effort are what force a school decision. If there's nothing better within the radius that the parents can reasonably drive with their life and work schedules than a Catholic school, so be it. They want the best for their kid; they're willing to invest over their tax amount.

I remember what the Catholics who came to Tennessee said to the school board: "We're used to Good Schools. We're also used to paying for them." Perhaps it was as much a question of getting a real education as it was going to parochial school?

Give the Indy Star some credit, that was a really good sidebar on what Wicca is and isn't.

Oh ... my ... (insert obscure diety here)!

That shouldn't stand for long, at least.
