Earlier today, in [livejournal.com profile] riverheart's journal, I said I'd say something about the movies we saw yesterday.

We viewed Terminator 3 and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

T3 was exactly what I expected it to be: an SFX-laden piece of eye candy, heavy on explosions and jaw-dropping set pieces, very very very light on plot. The terminatrix (not to be confused with an abysmal Japanese pr0n flick of the same name) displayed the mandatory bare bottom, the obligatory CGI weaponry, and the utter lack of characterization you'd expect from a killer robot. Ah-nuld tried to be charismatic, and failed utterly. Hope you folks in California have better taste in governors than the last time y'all elected an actor. The ending was a stone downer; Dr. Strangelove did it better, and was a vastly better film. Frankly, I think James Cameron did the right thing in choosing not to be involved with this production. I'm glad we only paid matinee prices.

LXG, on the other hand, was a hoot. Again, lots of eye candy; but this film was far better than its reviews would have led one to believe. Filled with literary references that betimes flash past the unwary eye, charmingly tongue-in-cheek, and just faithful enough to its source material, it was clearly the hit of our day. And besides: Sean Connery. Say no more. I'm glad we only paid matinee prices, but would have been just as happy to see it at evening rates.

We'd also wanted to watch Finding Nemo, The Hulk, and Pirates of the Caribbean some time this weekend, but they'll have to wait for another opportunity.

Oh, and [livejournal.com profile] riverheart is much improved. Thanks to all who have send their advice and good wishes; keep them coming.

So glad River is better. As for the movie,

I loved LXG, but the gents I was with (Mike and Woof) Didn't Get It. They never saw the graphic novel, and I was the only one in the group who had read all the source novels. Plus their scientific minds snapped their disbelief suspenders. I did meet two literate young women in the jakes who DID get it. I wanna take [livejournal.com profile] firefly67 to that movie. Mina rules!
