I read this via MetaFilter, and even though I don't know the person involved and never read her LJ before, I'm practically in tears about this.
CPL Sara Schroeder, USMC (
itsacountry), is a soldier in Iraq who adopted a local puppy. She named her Connor, raised her, fed her potted meat and long-life milk. She loved her, and wanted nothing more than to send her safely home to the U.S. To that end, CPL Schroeder collected funds to pay for Connor's travel.
On the evening of January 16 less than 24 hours before she was to leave Iraq Connor was hunted down and euthanized. Not by Iraqis, not by "insurgents", but by our own troops. Under orders.
Don't ask me why; I don't know. Maybe some moron in-country was hitting some dog with a stick and got bitten for his troubles, so some other asshat officer said, "Put'em all down." I don't want to know what kind of person can give orders to kill a puppy, or who'd take such orders without at least asking why.
All I know is that there's one less puppy in the world, and the world is a sadder place for it.
